Workplace Equity
BMO Nesbitt Burns is committed to developing and maintaining a diverse
workforce and an equitable and supportive workplace.
This
is an important commitment to employees, customers, and the communities
we serve. Striving for a diverse workforce and an equitable and supportive
workplace has earned BMO Nesbitt Burns and BMO Financial Group worldwide
recognition as an Employer of Choice. This commitment is founded in the
organization's core values and beliefs, and it leads to the success of
our business.
We are committed to building a diverse team, one that
reflects, to the fullest extent possible, the people we serve. The result
is a distinct competitive advantage.
Strategic Direction
In keeping with our Corporate Values the Chairman’s Council on the
Equitable Workplace sets the strategic direction for the organization’s
diversity and workplace equity initiative. The Council, chaired by Gilles
Ouellette, President and CEO, Private Client Group, BMO Nesbitt Burns,
meets quarterly to review progress and to advise on what needs to be done
to ensure that BMO Nesbitt Burns’ strength is drawn from the diversity
of our people and our businesses.
Who is Responsible?
Everyone — employees, managers and executives — has
a vital role to play in making workplace equity a day-to-day reality in
the organization. To make it happen, we all need to demonstrate the attitudes
and behaviours that contribute to an equitable and supportive work environment
where everyone has an equitable opportunity for employment and career
success.
Innovative Programs
Many of the organization's innovative human resource policies and programs
were developed as a result of our drive towards achieving our workplace
equity goals. These include:
- BMO Nesbitt Burns Job Postings
- Learning and Education Assistance
- Leave of Absence Policy
- Employee Assistance Program which includes Eldercare and Child Care
Advice and Referral Services
- Accommodation of people with disabilities through our Adaptive Technology
Services group and our Accommodation Fund
Measuring Our Progress
There are two key mechanisms for measuring our progress towards creating
an equitable workplace and building a diverse workforce: The Workforce
Survey and the Annual Employee Survey. These vehicles provide us with
a quantitative picture of how the face of the workforce is changing and
how well we are doing in creating a workplace where everyone is guaranteed
respect, fair treatment and equitable opportunities for career success.
In addition, qualitative information is collected on
an ongoing basis through the Private Client Group Diversity Council and
numerous other Diversity Councils and Affinity Groups throughout the organization,
employee focus groups, and our Human Resources Department.
Recognition
BMO Nesbitt Burns has received much recognition and is seen a leader for
its efforts in developing and maintaining a diverse workforce and an equitable
and supportive workplace. BMO was named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers
- the only financial institution to make the list. Mediacorp Canada Inc.'s
2003 edition of Canada's Top 100 Employers included companies from a range
of industries that are leaders in attracting and retaining quality employees.
In February 2003, the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) found BMO
Financial Group to be in compliance with all twelve statutory requirements
of the Employment Equity Act with no undertakings being ordered. Only
a few federally regulated organizations – nine per cent in fact
– have been able to pass without undertakings. BMO Nesbitt Burns
has also received numerous awards for its efforts in the advancement of
women, people with disabilities, Aboriginal employees, and visible minorities.
